01 — The challenge
Railsbank operates a comprehensive financial services platform designed to let fintechs, brands, and traditional financial institutions launch new products quickly by consuming a single API layer. Delivering on that promise required reliable, high-throughput connectivity between Railsbank's core platform and a long list of downstream partners — banks, financial institutions, and card issuers — each with their own integration standards, authentication flows, and operational quirks.
The challenge was two-fold. First, the platform needed to integrate cleanly with numerous external providers so that third-party API consumers could access a full suite of financial services (accounts, ledgers, card issuance) through a single, consistent interface. Second, the underlying infrastructure had to handle sustained high volumes of transactions without requiring manual technical assistance — meaning anything that touched money in flight had to operate reliably, predictably, and at peak load without an engineer watching over it.
02 — Our approach
We partnered with Railsbank to build seamless API integrations between the core platform and a growing network of financial institutions. The focus was on making each downstream integration look and feel consistent from the consumer's perspective — so fintechs building on top of Railsbank's API could plug into new banking rails without needing to understand the specifics of each partner.
Automated systems were designed to operate without manual technical intervention, ensuring consistent performance under peak transaction loads. The stack used Node.js for the integration services and AWS Lambda for elastic, event-driven processing — a combination that scaled cleanly as transaction volumes grew and kept operational overhead low. The resulting architecture let Railsbank onboard new partners and new API consumers without rebuilding the integration layer each time.
03 — The outcome
Enabled third-party consumers to access a complete range of financial services — accounts, ledgers, and card issuance — through a single API, with infrastructure that handles high transaction volumes reliably and with minimal manual intervention.
