01 — The challenge
Most banking apps treat money as a balance to check — open, glance, close. They're functional, forgettable, and they leave the hardest part (actually knowing what to do with your money) entirely up to the customer. The client set out to build something different: a Japanese consumer fintech pairing everyday banking — a high-yield savings account and a cashback debit card — with one-on-one financial advice, so customers get both the tools to manage their money and the guidance to use them well. The pitch isn't another bank account; it's a healthier relationship with money, built one habit at a time. Delivering on that promise meant building two hard things at once: a banking platform solid enough to move real money safely, and a mobile experience polished enough that people actually want to open it.
Consumer banking is a brutal combination of requirements. The platform underneath has to be exact, secure, and compliant with a heavily regulated financial market. The app on top has to be effortless — the kind of experience that survives the comparison with every other app on a customer's phone. Get the platform right but the app clunky, and nobody adopts it; get the app slick but the platform shaky, and you can't be trusted with money. The client needed both, built to the same standard, by a team that could hold the engineering discipline of a bank and the product polish of a consumer app in the same hands — with correctness, security, and compliance treated as the foundation, not features to retrofit later.
02 — Our approach
We partnered with the client to build the banking platform and the mobile app that runs on it — the full stack from the money-movement engine to the screens in the customer's hand. The work spanned both layers: the banking platform behind the savings account, debit card, and customer fund movement, built with the accuracy, security, and auditability that handling real money demands; the mobile-first app that brings banking, spending, and financial guidance into one place and is designed to feel simple even when the systems behind it aren't; the advice experience that surfaces one-on-one financial guidance inside the app, so banking and advice live side by side rather than in separate worlds; and regulatory alignment built in from the ground up to meet the security and compliance expectations of a regulated financial market.
The defining constraint was that the two halves couldn't be built in isolation — a consumer fintech only works when the platform and the app are designed together, with the experience the product team imagines actually backed by systems that can deliver it safely. So we worked as one team across the stack: the people thinking about transaction integrity and the people thinking about the onboarding flow making decisions with full sight of each other. That's how you avoid the classic split where a beautiful app hides a fragile core, or a rock-solid platform is trapped behind an interface nobody enjoys using. Throughout, security and compliance set the floor — in a regulated market, trust is the product, and trust is earned in the parts of the system the customer never sees.
03 — The outcome
Launched a consumer banking app backed by a platform built specifically for it — banking, a cashback debit card, and one-on-one financial advice unified in a single mobile experience, on infrastructure the client owns and controls. With both halves built in concert, the product evolves as fast as the team can ship, and the loop between the advice customers receive and the tools they use to act on it stays tight.
